Ian Melville - Managing Director

Ian began his career in the hospitality industry as a kitchen porter in his early teens in Oban—and hasn’t looked back since.

A move to University of Strathclyde to study Business Law and Marketing brought him back to Glasgow, where he developed a strong affinity for the on-trade while completing his degree.

After a brief two-year period outside the industry—while still working weekend shifts—Ian broadened his commercial experience within oil and gas recruitment, before returning to hospitality as a Business Development Manager for Hi-Spirits (Sazerac Company) on the East Coast of Scotland.

He then progressed into a four-year regional management role, overseeing the North East of England and Scotland. During this time, Ian led the growth of a diverse portfolio of over 60 brands, including those from globally recognised, award-winning producers such as Buffalo Trace Distillery and Fratelli Branca Distillerie.

Now serving as Managing Director at Base Spirits Collective, Ian is driven by the opportunity to build and shape a dynamic business from the ground up. Since its inception, he has played a key role in scaling the business from just two founding brand partners to a rapidly expanding portfolio of over 14. This growth reflects a clear strategic vision, strong industry relationships, and a consistent focus on partnering with high-quality, distinctive brands—positioning the business as an increasingly influential player within the drinks industry.

Working alongside a highly experienced and passionate team, Ian remains focused on continuing this momentum and building a forward-thinking, best-in-class portfolio.
